From Brno to the South

The Brno–Mikulov route begins in the very heart of Brno at the Church of St. James, the central hub of the Ways of St. James in South Moravia. Mass is celebrated here daily, and guided tours are available during the season. Beneath the church, you can visit Europe’s second-largest ossuary (tours are in high demand, so booking in advance is recommended). Collect your first stamp from the pilgrim box at the church entrance - or purchase your credencial at the parish office across the street.

From the Centre of Brno to Rajhrad

The pilgrimage route leads across Freedom Square into Panská and Radnická Streets, climbs via the Vegetable Market (Zelný trh) to Petrov Hill, skirts the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, and continues along terraces past the Bašty street toward the main railway station. Passing under the railway viaduct, it follows Křenová Street to the Svitava River, where it joins the red hiking trail. Six pleasant kilometres take you to the confluence with the Svratka near Olympia Shopping Centre.

From there, the Way of St. James follows the left bank of the Svratka for six kilometres to the bridge connecting Rajhradice and Rajhrad. Cross the bridge, turn right, and after 300 metres enter the monastery grounds, home to the Museum of Literature in Moravia. A date-stamped pilgrim mark can be found in the pilgrim box on the wall beside the church.

Rajhrad – Vojkovice – Židlochovice

The route skirts the monastery and continues along the red trail through an avenue to Holasice (stamp at the chapel), passes the Ludmila pool (Tůně Ludmily), and heads to Vojkovice to the Church of St. Lawrence (stamp on the fence by the church). Then follow cycle route 5172 to the bridge, turn right, and reach the signpost near Židlochovice Chateau, where an information board and a pilgrim box are located. Cross the modern bridge to the town square.

Židlochovice – Nosislav – Uherčice

From the square, the route turns right and follows cycle route 5149 along the edge of vineyards to the fortified Church of St. James the Elder in Nosislav. The stamp is located by the wine press. Continue via Pod Kopcem Street along the Svratka River to the Boudecký Bridge and the chateau in Velké Němčice, where another stamp awaits. Continue via Brodačská Street to the river meanders, cross the weir, and expect a short stretch through woodland. After three kilometres, you reach Uherčice. The stamp can be found at the entrance to the local pub.

Uherčice – Popice

From Uherčice, the Way of St. James follows the red trail to the wine cellars and along the cycle path over Hochberk Hill before descending directly into Popice. A variant route branches off near the cellars, heading south past a solitary linden tree and a cross. Before the Popice Stream, the path turns sharply right and after two kilometres reaches the outskirts of Popice near the shooting range (WARNING: LIVE FIRING). Follow the main street to the Church of St. Andrew (Kostel sv. Ondřeje). Behind the pub, you’ll find a rest area with a pilgrim point. The variant route rejoins the main red trail here and continues toward Mikulov.

Popice – Pálava – Klentnice

Beyond the railway, expect a gentle ascent. The route passes beneath a small airfield with breathtaking views of the Nové Mlýny reservoirs and the Pálava Hills, then descends into Strachotín. Pilgrims will find a welcoming St. James bench near the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius. The pilgrim box is located on the cemetery wall to the left. From the church, it’s just 500 metres to the dam dividing the Nové Mlýny reservoirs.

The next two kilometres connect Strachotín with Dolní Věstonice. Shortly past the Church of St. Michael, the red trail climbs steeply right toward the cemetery (pilgrim box on the gate) and through vineyards to the romantic ruins of Děvičky Castle. From there, the Way of St. James follows the ridge of the Pálava Hills for about five kilometres, passing near Děvín hill and along the boundary of the nature reserve, before descending to Klentnice.

Klentnice – Mikulov

From Klentnice, continue along the red trail to Sirotčí hrádek (stamp behind the information board), then past viewpoints on Stolová hora mountain. After two kilometres, the route rejoins the road and follows the edge of vineyards into Mikulov, where it turns sharply right toward the caves and quarry Na Turoldu. From there, the route continues east along the yellow trail through U Lomu, Havlíčkova, and Habánská Streets, climbing to Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill) with its Holy Sepulchre, bell tower, and the Church of St. Sebastian. Another pilgrim box awaits at the signpost. The route then descends along the blue trail via the Stations of the Cross to the centre of Mikulov, where you can choose from a treasure trove of gastronomic delights.

At the information centre on the square, you can sign the pilgrim book, get information about continuing the Way of St. James in Austria, and collect the final stamp of your journey — or perhaps set off across the border right away?

From Mikulov to Austria

From the square, the Way of St. James continues along red hiking signs via Piarist Street, past the swimming pool and football field, across the railway line, and along the historic signal path to the state border. The distance from the square to the border is 3.5 kilometres. In Austria, the route continues to Kleinschweinbarth (3.5 km), Falkenstein (9 km), and onward to Poysdorf, Mistelbach, Großrußbach, Stockerau, and Krems an der Donau. You can also join the Austrian Way of St. James further east in Drasenhofen, at the entrance to the beautiful Kaiserstraße wine cellar lane.
