What exactly is a “mikveh”, how is it performed and who can enter it? You can find out in one of the oldest houses in the Jewish quarter in Boskovice.
An exceptional space for this Jewish tradition is hidden in the U Templu house No. 5 opposite the major synagogue. A mikveh is a tank with clean natural water, in which a state of ritual purification can be attained. The local mikveh is fed by two natural springs. A mikveh should have at least 762 litres of water and be deep enough to enable an adult person to completely immerse.
On the eve of the Sabbath and Jewish holidays, all pious Jews are purified in the mikveh. It is used by devout women who, according to Jewish law, are obliged to purify themselves (immerse) before marriage, after menstruation and after childbirth. It is possible to enter the mikveh by means of the inner stone steps. Items of impure origin, such as new kitchen utensils, are also purified in the mikveh before they are used in a kosher kitchen. The operation of the mikveh must be consecrated by a rabbi.
The mikveh was brought to a state close to its historical appearance by the Club of Friends of Boskovice with the financial contribution of the Prague Civic Forum Foundation. It was ceremoniously opened in 2005. However, you should see all of the Jewish treasures of Boskovice.
