Leave your car at home this time, not just because you might be sampling the perfect local wines. By train or by bus, the connections to Mikulov are ideal.
First visit the vast Jewish cemetery in Mikulov. It is one of the most significant and largest Jewish cemeteries in the Czech Republic. You will meet the well-preserved upper synagogue and beautiful burgher houses in picturesque Husova Street on the way. The street is part of a historical-preservation area. Overlooking the old Jewish houses is the majestic chateau of the Dietrichstein family above. (This is a great thing about Mikulov – even if you do not pay for any guided tour, you can still experience history and sights wherever you go.)
Follow the red St. Jacob’s trail (Svatojakubská Cesta) from the Jewish cemetery to the Kozí Hrádek (Goat Castle) viewpoint. Stick to the red marker until you come to the beautiful cave called Na Turoldu. In hot summer you can cool down during a one-hour visit of this cave with a fairy-tale blue lake. You will also go up and down three hundred and fifty stairs, and that deserves a reward. Mikulov is excellent for this.
Do you love perfect coffee or Moravian wine? Do you appreciate bistros with an interesting concept and food made from local ingredients? You can find a number of them around the square. Then go up the church tower to have a lovely view and take some nice photos.
Next to St. Wenceslas Church, there is the castle we have already mentioned with the Regional Museum. You definitely must not miss the famous giant barrel in the cellar room of the castle.
The last stop is the Dietrichstein Tomb, which you can get to across the square. From there, go down the hill past the town walls towards the bus/train station. To have the last coffee in Mikulov, stop by in (Ne)vinná Kavárna where the famous painter Alfons Mucha used to sip it. The view of the castle is a bonus. Follow the blue tourist marker from the café. It will lead you to the bus or train station to go back home.
