The Synagogue in Dolní Kounice

Beautiful Dolní Kounice with one of the oldest synagogues in Moravia is an ideal destination for a trip.

The protected cultural monument dating back to 1645 looks inconspicuous. However, the synagogue is one of the oldest in Moravia and it went through difficult times in the 20th century.

It is special because it is not oriented towards the cardinal directions as was usual, but rather in line with the Christian churches in the town. Its early Baroque character and the preserved Hebrew inscriptions on the walls inside the synagogue speak to visitors with their purity and ornamental decoration.

The synagogue was forced to close in the 1940s, when the Nazis banned Jewish services. After the war, it was used as a warehouse, and it was not until 1991 that the synagogue was returned to the Brno Jewish Community. It has been completely restored to offer its precious spaces for concerts, culture and social events. When you wander through Dolní Kounice, we highly recommend that you not miss it!
