An ordinary hill, you might think. But this one hides within it seven floors of wine cellars just like in a fairy tale. Welcome to the Velké Pavlovice wine region.
The cellars grouped into whole cellar alleys are typical for the whole region. Some of them are such a fine example of folk architecture that they are protected as a cultural monument. This is the case of the Vrbice complex, where you will find an unusual set of cellars on several floors inside the slope of the Stráž hill.
The Pod Strážním Kopcem cellar colony is dotted with sandstone cellars. Each of the seven floors has a different name, but otherwise the buildings are united in appearance, the entrances resemble a Gothic arch.
At the top of the hill, the pseudo-Romanesque church of St. Gilles from the beginning of the 20th century, a dominant feature of the landscape, oversees the ingenious piece of work. From here, there are magnificent views of the surrounding viticultural landscape. You can go to Kobylí to the museum or to the unique wine lookout tower, to the cellars in Čejkovice, or to Bořetice to the Pod Kraví Horou cellar colony. But before that, taste the Neuburg, Traminer or Welschriesling varieties in the cellar colony in Vrbice!
