Visiting a wine cellar is always a pleasant experience. And when the cellar looks like a painting… actually not looking like one, it is really painted!
The wine cellar decorated with plastic paintings (your children would probably say “3D”) by folk artist Maxmillian Appeltauer was dug into the sandstone hillside above Šatov. Strangely enough, wine was never produced or stored here! It was probably intended to serve as a private wine room and a place for pleasant gatherings.
Underground, you will find yourself in a strange realm of mermaids, dwarfs and alpine landscapes. Their creator – himself a native of Šatov – dedicated his life to the painted cellar. He worked on this decor Sunday after Sunday for thirty-six years, and even an injury in the Second World War, when he lost his arm, did not stop him.
Since 2011, the Painted Cellar has been operated by Chateau Šatov s.r.o., which produces delicious wines from Šatov and the surrounding area in the neighbouring cellar. During the tour, be sure to taste some of the wines. Their best state-of-art varieties are Veltliner, Riesling, Sauvignon and Burgundy varieties…
