Even from a great distance this majestic castle will tempt all to come and visit it. No wonder Napoleon himself spent the night here.
In Pálava and in Mikulov itself, tourists hardly know where to go first, but you definitely shouldn’t miss the chateau. It stands on a rocky cliff as the right landmark. Originally, it was a castle dating back to the 13th century, because it was simply impossible not to make use of such a convenient location. Today, no one would believe that the castle burned down in 1945, so successful was the subsequent renovation.
Most of the time, the structure was owned by the powerful Liechtensteins, followed by the Dietrichsteins. They left us a beautiful library and a hall of ancestors. Today, the chateau is the seat of the Regional Museum in Mikulov, which has prepared several exhibitions for you. There are both guided and self-guided tours here. Which one will you choose?
We suggest that fans of great style head for the exhibition From the Gothic to the Empire. Wine lovers will appreciate the exhibition Wine across the Centuries. It will take them all the way to ancient Egypt, to the Romanesque cellar, to the Gothic chapel and to the Baroque theatre. An interactive bike ride through the wine trails will provide you with a view of the vineyards… And of course you will see the famous giant barrel here.
We bet you won’t be disappointed by the castle garden either. It is one of the largest chateau gardens in the Czech Republic! Garden terraces located at several different altitudes wind around the entire perimeter of the Castle Hill. You can choose a place to go for a glass of local wine from here...
