Nové Mlýny Reservoirs

A trio of water reservoirs at the foot of Pálava, from where the ruins of Děvičky look down on an abandoned church on an island in the middle of the waters. Romance non plus ultra.

The Nové Mlýny complex consists of three reservoirs: Mušov, Nové Mlýny and Věstonice between them. These were created in the 1970s for purely practical reasons, namely to manage the annual floods and to provide more space for agriculture. That the result was a beautiful, endless body of water which looks like an alpine lake, was a nice side effect.

The upper Mušov reservoir is dedicated to recreation, the middle reservoir is a nature reserve with islands for bird nesting, while the lower reservoir is for irrigation, fishing and recreation. The Pálava Protected Landscape Area begins here and you can hike up to the romantic ruins of Děvičky (Dívčí Hrady). Formerly, there was an amazing grassland landscape here, but the vast body of water serves nature equally well today – this is the most important wintering ground for Nordic geese. You can see up to 30,000 of them here at once. And if you look at the sky for a while, you will catch sight of sea eagles who also like to spend the winter here!

This place is also beautiful for human visitors. Nové Mlýny and the surrounding area is a perfect location for hiking and biking. This place doesn’t need advertising because good things sell themselves. So just very briefly: take a ride around the water on a bike or kickbikes. Apart from swimming, the water calls you to go windsurfing or to make a boat trip. On the shore towards Brno, you will find the huge Aqualand Moravia for fans of thermal spas, with a wellness centre and sauna. And because you are in a wine region, you can enjoy quality local wines at every turn. Sample the delicacies, enjoy active leisure and relax. The Nové Mlýny Reservoirs are made just for it.
