Homage to all victims of the bloody conflict was paid here for the first time in Europe. Come and honour the lives lost in the battle...
The Cairn of Peace is a historically unique war memorial with a message of peace. It is not dedicated to the heroic winners or to the brave defeated, rather it embodies piety for all people killed in war. It stands on the battlefield as a place of light, as a memorial for wars, and to honour all victims of the Battle of Austerlitz (known as Slavkov in Czech) fought in December 1805.
The priest and pedagogue Alois Slovák came up with the idea to build the memorial and it was realized by famous architect Josef Fanta. The slim building with an extended base is the dominant feature and the natural centre of the Slavkov Battlefield monument preservation area. Every year, at the end of November and the beginning of December, a remembrance ceremony is held here to honour the dead warriors.
Come and see the multimedia exhibition “The Battle of the Three Emperors. Austerlitz–Slavkov 1805” in the renovated museum next to the cairn. Don’t worry, this is no staid and traditional display of dates and facts, you can expect an extraordinary experience!
This mother of all battles is also commemorated by Santon near Slavkov u Brna, a hill west of the village of Tvarožná, which was strategically chosen by Napoleon himself as a site for his artillery.
