The True Service Tree Trail

A tree that sounds like it’s providing a true service. But it does really exist. It grows in the White Carpathian Mountains, and you can taste it – on the educational True Service Tree Trail!

A rare species of thermophilic tree in the Sorbus genus. It is one of the rarest fruit trees in Europe and abounds in fruit – even a three-hundred-year-old tree produces over a ton of fruit. Its wood is one of the strongest from any tree, and the mature specimens you will see on the educational trail are unique in the world.

Get to know this rare tree on the True Service Tree Trail in Moravian Slovakia, in the foothills of the White Carpathians. It is marked with a red diagonal stripe and is divided into two tours of 3 and 7 kilometres, respectively.

Start your hike in Tvarožná Lhota. Walk through the village, and behind it you will find Tomeček’s and Špiruda’s True Service Tree. Before you reach the lookout tower, make a small left turn to the Travičná Chalet. There is an exposition of kopaničář farmers’ log cabins, an arboretum of varieties of true service tree and the opportunity to buy a tree sapling. Or you can just have a true service tree fruit treat and refresh yourself with a rest. Head for the views of the picturesque region from the Travičná Lookout Tower! There you can decide whether you want to take a small tour around another true service tree back to Tvarožná Lhota or go downhill through the forest towards Radějov to get onto the blue hiking trail.

The longer trail leads to the information centre and up the blue hiking trail to the edge of Radějov to the spring, to the junction with the yellow hiking trail. Follow it out of the forest, down to the viewpoint on Holý Vrch hill. Go down along the windbreak below Žerotín hill. Either climb it or be tempted by the small turn off the trail for a little sip of wine at the Hotařská Búda shack. Either way, you won’t miss the tallest Adamec’s true service tree! You will pass around it between the vineyards on the asphalt cycling path to Radějov. And from the church along the dirt road over the hill back to Tvarožná Lhota.

Along the way, admire solitary or grouped true service trees, ranging from little ones to true giants!
