Both a legend and careful scientific research arose from the remains of a prehistoric hearth. This figure of a naked woman comes from the Upper Paleolithic, dating back to the period 29,000–25,000 BC, and is the oldest known ceramic statuette in the world! The finding refuted the assumption that people in the Paleolithic did not yet know pottery.

It was in the summer of 1925 when the team of archaeologist Karel Absolon discovered the Venus together with some animal figures in Dolní Věstonice. This sparked a sensation among scholars, as this place proved to have been a settlement of prehistoric colonists and many other findings confirmed the uniqueness and the extent of the whole area.

Moravské zemské muzeum takes care of the legacy of this unique finding and is currently reconstructing the exhibition directly in Dolní Věstonice. An archaeo-trail that is three and a half kilometres long leads through the whole area up to Pavlov. Get to know the Paleolithic during five stops in the beautiful scenery of Pálava. You will hardly be closer to nature anywhere else.
