What is it that makes Villa Tugendhat so unique and special?

One of the most famous European architects, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, started to build it for the Tugendhat family in 1929. He was not limited by any budget, so he chose only the best materials for the construction and interior equipment. Some of them were shipped to Brno from overseas...

...for instance the famous onyx wall from Morocco! If you have only seen it in the film The Glass Room with Karel Roden, Carice van Houten et al., it is time to see it with your own eyes.

In addition to design and material excellence, van der Rohe built a system in the villa similar to today’s air conditioning and blown heating. The photocell at the entrance and the electric retraction of windows were truly original elements!

The Tugendhats moved into the villa at Christmas 1930, but they lived there only until 1938, when they had to flee from the Nazis. The villa in its perfect original form is inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites.

In addition to guided tours, this phenomenal demonstration of modern world architecture hosts classical music concerts and other social and cultural events. Book the tour in advance, it is usually crowded.

Along with Villa Löw-BeerJurkovič Villa and Villa Stiassni, Villa Tugendhat is part of the so-called Brno Villa Quartet. We recommend you gradually visit all of them, they are astonishing!

To visit Villa Tugendhat, you can use the BrnoPas, which brings you tips for interesting places, discounts on admission and many other benefits, including transport around Brno free of charge.
