In 1809, the area around Znojmo became the scene of a significant Napoleonic battle, in which the Austrian army faced the superior forces of France and its allies.
Dobšice suffered the heaviest losses during the battle, with much of the village reduced to ashes. Today, this dramatic chapter of history is commemorated not only by memorials but also through the annual Battle of Znojmo re-enactment, held at the beginning of July and accompanied by the traditional “Conquest of the Dobšice Wine Cellars” festival.
The programme traditionally begins on Friday afternoon with a parade of uniformed cavalry riders through the centre of Znojmo, followed in the evening by a commemorative ceremony at Louka Cemetery, honouring soldiers who fell in the Napoleonic Wars and other conflicts.
On Saturday, visitors can enjoy military manoeuvres and a large-scale battle re-enactment, culminating in a dramatic clash inspired by the story of one of the soldiers who fought in the campaign.
The historical atmosphere is enhanced by an authentic military camp beside Louka Monastery, open to visitors throughout the day. From there, the armies march to the forest park near Dobšice, where preparations for the battle take place before the main battle re-enactment at 2:00 PM, complete with a final skirmish fought directly in the river.
At the same time, the village hosts the “Conquest of the Dobšice Wine Cellars”, a wine-themed event taking place in the local cellar lanes.
This military history event is a spectacular showcase of period uniforms, historic weapons, cavalry units, artillery fire, and battle scenes, making it one of the top events in the Znojmo region.
Please note that the battle re-enactment is not recommended for small children or dogs due to the very high noise levels caused by cannon fire and gunshots. The battlefield is also fully exposed to the sun, so visitors are advised to prepare for hot July weather and changing conditions.
Admission to the battle re-enactment is free. Visitors may arrive on foot or by car, with parking available nearby. All attendees are asked to follow the instructions of the event organisers for their safety and comfort
