Speaking of the First Republic, Villa Tugendhat should definitely be your first stop. It is important to point out that this UNESCO site is in such enormous demand that it is necessary to book your tickets in advance. Or you can get the BRNOPAS, which gives you a chance to see the interiors of the villa. Still not successful? Never mind, just paying a visit to the garden is well worth it. You can enjoy functionalist interiors in the nearby ERA Café, where they also serve fantastic coffee.
From the café, set out along Schodová Street towards another jewel of modern architecture, the Villa Löw-Beer. In this Art Nouveau villa, you can feel the spirit of Brno’s high society in the late 19th and early 20th century thanks to the exhibition The World of the Brno Bourgeoisie Around the Löw-Beers and the Tugendhats. You will soak up the atmosphere of the “Moravian Manchester”, as Brno was called back then… Top up the experience by having a luxurious lunch in the Kohout NA VÍNĚ (Coq au Vin) restaurant, one of the finalists in the Fine Dining category of the Gourmet 2019 project.
Let’s continue on the wave of bourgeoisie and the First Republic. Go to the next gem of the architecture of the early 20th century: the Villa Stiassni. There are guided tours every hour from Friday to Monday and everybody who visits this villa remembers it for a long time to come. After the tour, you can relax in the garden. (Do you find the villa familiar? You may have seen it in the Czech film Lída Baarová.) You can see other houses from this period in the area around the villa.
You can take tram 1 (we recommend you take a walk past the Brno Exhibition Centre though) and go to Mendlovo Náměstí (Mendel’s Square). In the confectionery Sorry – Pečeme Jinak (Sorry – We Bake in a Different Way), they will bring you back to modern times in a smooth but unusual way by serving you creative desserts with slightly cheeky names. Then it is only four stops to the main train station by tram 1.
Equip yourselves for the journey in the First Republic style with the following brochures in the information centre: Small Guide Through the City, Gourmet 2019, BRNOPAS, WHAT IS BRNO? 4 VILLAS, WHAT IS BRNO? The Exhibition Centre in Brno, or download them onto your phone at: https://www.gotobrno.cz/brno-prakticky/ke-stazeni/.
A tip for tired visitors: a sightseeing minibus tour, which follows the route of the 4 VILLAS. You will only visit the gardens, but you will also be able to see the Jurkovič Villa…
