You cannot find any other gem like this north of the Alps – the original (not rebuilt!) Renaissance chateau is the implementation of an original design, including the garden, the defensive wall and the moat. There is no need to climb up a hill, as the chateau is unconventionally situated in a valley.
The last man from an ancient family, Jan Šembera from Boskovice, commissioned the construction of the chateau from the art expert and imperial antiquarian of that time Strada, who designed the magnificent building and also the exquisite interiors. Late Renaissance artists from across Europe imprinted their talent on them. You can see their work in the representation halls with unique painted ceilings. Walk through the Rabbit Room, the Venus Hall, the Imperial Room, the Bird Hall, the Hall of the Senses, the Armoury and Food Preparation Room and the Baroque Chapel.
The stately ninety columns of the arcade courtyard are decorated with five hundred and forty reliefs. War motifs, coats of arms, plants, fantastic animals and beings as well as musical instruments come to life thanks to the craftsmanship of Italian stonemasons. The Mannerist fountains from a later period featuring mermaids sitting on dolphins and dragon heads spewing water also come from their workshops. The scene is crowned by a debauched man on the top.
The chateau is also the seat of the Museum of the Vyškov Region, or rather its Bučovice branch to be more specific. In five halls, the exhibition “Bučovice in History” shows the development of the town and its surroundings from the most ancient findings to 1945.
